Principles of Pope Wiped-Film Short-Path Molecular Distillation

Pope Scientific Inc. has been a pioneer in wiped-film molecular stills (WFMS) and wiped-film evaporators (WFE) since 1976. This specialized technology is engineered for separating thermal-sensitive, high-molecular-weight, and viscous compounds that would degrade in conventional reboilers.

Feed liquid is continuously wiped into an ultra-thin turbulent film against a heated cylindrical wall under high vacuum.

The internal condenser, situated adjacent to the evaporating surface, allows vapor molecules to travel directly without pressure drop, drastically reducing boiling temperature and residence time to seconds.

Scalable Configurations from Laboratory to Commercial Production

Pope wiped-film systems are fully scalable from benchtop 2-inch glass units to 4-inch pilot systems and heavy industrial 6-inch, 12-inch, and 20-inch stainless steel evaporators.
