History of the TREIF factory in Oberlahr and integration into JBT Marel
The German manufacturer TREIF was founded in 1948 by engineer Toni Reifenhäuser. Starting with the manufacturing of sharpening stones and bone saws for butcher workshops, the company steadily focused on developing precision machinery for food cutting operations.
Since 1976, the design engineering offices and manufacturing facilities of TREIF have been located in Oberlahr.
In 2020, the facility joined the international technology group Marel, continuing operations as Marel TREIF GmbH, and subsequently integrated into JBT Marel.
This integration brought together decades of German mechanical engineering craftsmanship with global service networks, advancing machines for sectioning meat, poultry, cheese, and bakery products.
Design and motion kinematics of industrial DIVIDER slicers
DIVIDER startUp, lineUp, and orbital slicers are constructed upon rigid stainless steel support structures equipped with vibration dampening pads.
The rotation of the circular or planetary cutting blade is powered by a direct servo motor drive featuring dynamic velocity control, preventing mechanical compression across soft cheeses and deli meats.
Energy-efficient ECO SLICING technology enables portion slicing of food products at elevated core temperatures without intensive cryogenic pre-tempering, preserving natural texture while lowering facility electricity use.
An optical scanning module and dynamic checkweighing scale monitor individual portions, relaying feedback directly to the carriage drive.
Raw material separation principles in FELIX dicing machines
The FELIX dicing series and heavy-duty industrial ARGOS and TWISTER dicers employ a dual-action cutting methodology.
During the primary stage, a hydraulic ram advances fresh or tempered meat blocks through perpendicular grid knife assemblies, forming longitudinal product strips of defined dimensions without squeezing out valuable cellular moisture.
During the secondary stage, a robust sickle knife slices the advancing strips into uniform cubes at speeds of several hundred revolutions per minute.
Patented hydraulic control of product pre-compression balances irregular raw material geometries, maintaining uniform cutting density from initial contact to the final slice without processing scrap.
Portion sectioning of steaks and bone-in loins in PUMA slicers
High-capacity PUMA and FALCON portion slicing units are engineered for high-speed sectioning of chilled and tempered meat products, both boneless and bone-in cuts.
The reinforced blade spindle is driven by a high-torque electric motor delivering high peak cutting forces when driving the sickle blade through dense bone structures.
A pneumatic product gripper secures the primal cut across the entire working stroke, while a synchronized take-away conveyor transfers sliced portions without disturbing their shape.
Operating with a dual blade configuration doubles throughput up to 400 cuts per minute while maintaining uniform slice thickness and preventing splintered bone particles.
Oil-free bakery cutting technology in PRIMUS machines
PRIMUS 400 bread slicers and DISKUS rotary units are engineered to operate without cutting oil.
The circular rotary knife features a non-stick fluoropolymer coating that prevents soft crumb adhesion during slicing of warm fresh loaves or sticky pastries containing fruit fillings and glazes, operating completely free of lubricating oil sprays.
Eliminating oil sprays preserves natural bakery aroma, extends packaged bread shelf freshness, and prevents oily residue formation.
The planetary gear drive mechanism incorporates counterbalanced weights, reducing operating vibration and noise levels in supermarket sales areas or artisan bakery storefronts during peak retail periods.
Precision manufacturing of patented nanoBlade cutting knives
A core technological advantage of TREIF cutting systems is the coordinated development of the machinery and the cutting blade as a single mechanical assembly.
Proprietary nanoBlade knives are manufactured in Oberlahr from chromium-molybdenum alloy tool steel using precision laser profiling followed by cryogenic hardening for maximum edge durability.
Micro-ground edge geometry minimizes cutting friction across delicate food fibers, eliminating juice loss and yielding clean slice faces.
Regular knife re-sharpening using dedicated workshop fixtures restores original edge bevel angles, extending total blade operating life before scheduled mechanical replacement cycles.
