Chart Marine systems selection and engineering
Configure Chart Marine NAVISTURBO air lubrication compressors, EGR blowers, LNG/LH2 marine fuel gas systems (FGSS) and VIP piping according to vessel specifications and marine classification rules.
EGR blowers for IMO Tier III (EGR10, EGR22, EGR24)
HV-TURBO EGR10, EGR22 and EGR24 blowers serve two-stroke marine diesel exhaust gas recirculation systems. The manufacturer portfolio states up to 80% reduction in NOx formation for EGR. The blower must match the engine project.
- Single-stage blower with asynchronous motor and frequency drive
- EGR10, EGR22 and EGR24 model series
- Contact-free carbon floating ring seals
- Oil-lubricated journal bearings and integrated service pathways
Marine LNG Fuel Gas Supply Systems (FGSS)
Marine LNG FGSS combines LNG storage with fuel-gas preparation and delivery to engines. The official scope lists Type C tanks, bunkering skids, Tank Connection Spaces, vaporization equipment, controls and piping to gas valve units.
- Type C cryogenic fuel storage tanks
- TCS incorporating valves, instrumentation and evaporation
- Water-glycol heating and associated piping
- Gas delivery to engine GVU/GRU assemblies
Liquid hydrogen FGSS LH2 propulsion systems
Chart Marine describes fixed liquid-hydrogen FGSS, exchangeable cryogenic ISO containers and a hybrid LNG/LH2 tank architecture. The preferred configuration depends on vessel duty and the available bunkering arrangement.
- Fixed hydrogen storage and fuel supply systems
- Exchangeable full-for-empty cryogenic ISO containers
- Hybrid LNG/LH2 tank architecture for a staged transition
- Engineered equipment upstream of engines or fuel cells
Large bore vacuum insulated pipe (VIP) systems
Vacuum insulated pipe transfers LNG from storage to the bunkering point. Chart Marine illustrates an installation in Tacoma. Its case-specific dimensions and transfer duty do not define the limits of the complete VIP product range.
- Selection by medium, required flow and design pressure
- Review of inner pipe and containment arrangement
- Route geometry and connection verification
- Scope agreed for the specific bunkering installation
WHR steam turbines
WHR steam turbines convert steam energy into generator, compressor or pump drive power. The Chart Marine portfolio describes modular packaging, an integrated gearbox and partial-load operation across a 10–100% load profile.
- Generator or rotating-equipment drive applications
- Turbine wheel milled from solid
- Modular single-skid arrangement
- Selection based on steam conditions and driven-load requirements
Marine ventilation and cooling fans
Axial and centrifugal fans in the Chart Marine portfolio support vessel ventilation and cooling. Applications include crew areas, machinery spaces, HVAC and emergency extraction. Construction is selected against the vessel specification.
- Axial and centrifugal fan arrangements
- Crew-area and machinery-space ventilation
- Cooling, HVAC and emergency extraction duties
- Noise, vibration and shock requirements considered
Marine carbon capture systems
The marine portfolio includes a phase-change process for exhaust CO₂ capture and liquefaction. The manufacturer states capture above 90% for its technology. The project also considers onboard storage and subsequent use of the liquid CO₂.
- Phase-change CO₂ capture and liquefaction
- Purified liquid CO₂ as the resulting product
- Newbuild and retrofit applications
- Selection considers exhaust duty and onboard storage
Identify the installed unit and define the replacement scope
Start with a readable nameplate photograph, the equipment designation, serial number and the manual page showing the required assembly. If a part has already been removed, provide photographs from several angles together with any visible marking.
Keep the designation of the complete system separate from the requested component number. A marine installation can contain machines from several manufacturers, so a system name alone is insufficient to identify a replacement.
For EGR equipment, specify whether the installed blower belongs to the EGR10, EGR22 or EGR24 series. The manufacturer describes carbon floating ring seals, oil-lubricated journal bearings and integrated service pathways.
A request for a seal or bearing should include its drawing position, quantity and assembly reference. Photographs can support identification, while the final selection is matched against the installed unit documentation and the required version.
For NAVISTURBO, identify the standard ALS or engine-supported ESAL configuration. The dedicated brochure distinguishes their control arrangements: inlet guide and diffuser vanes for the standard compressor, and a variable frequency drive with diffuser vanes for ESAL.
State whether the request concerns a control assembly, a mechanical component or a complete compressor package. This distinction keeps a maintenance enquiry separate from a new equipment specification.
Specify fuel systems and cryogenic connections
An LNG FGSS enquiry should identify the relevant system boundary: Type C storage tank, Tank Connection Space, vaporizer, heating arrangement or piping to the engine GVU/GRU. Mark the requested scope on the process diagram.
A valve, instrument, pipe section and fully equipped skid are different procurement items even when they serve the same fuel system. State which existing components will remain in service and where the new scope connects to them.
For valves and instrumentation, provide the manufacturer designation, medium, design pressure and temperature, connection dimensions and material requirements. Attach the applicable specification sheet and the relevant process diagram together.
System ratings and individual component ratings should be recorded separately. Interface review uses the installed equipment documentation and the vessel project requirements rather than assumptions based on a similar installation or a photograph.
For liquid hydrogen, identify the architecture under consideration: fixed FGSS, exchangeable cryogenic ISO containers or hybrid LNG/LH2 storage. For VIP piping, provide the proposed route, connection points and available space.
The Tacoma case study illustrates one LNG installation; its dimensions and duty do not set a universal rating for another vessel, a different medium or a modified bunkering arrangement. Project inputs determine the requested technical scope.
Plan maintenance packages and verify equipment interfaces
Divide a maintenance enquiry into required items, associated components and questions requiring clarification before ordering. State the planned maintenance date, delivery destination and whether separate shipments are acceptable.
For a kit, provide the quantity of parts per machine and the number of machines being serviced. This prevents a kit count from being mistaken for the quantity of individual rings, bearings or valves.
Use the manual for the installed equipment to establish maintenance intervals and replacement criteria. Attach the relevant manual section, defect description and available measurement records.
For an instrument or actuator, provide its designation, electrical supply, output signal, connection drawing and required execution. These are project inputs to verify; a single communication protocol, protection rating or service interval cannot be assigned to the entire marine portfolio.
For a WHR turbine, provide steam conditions, driven-equipment duty, the arrangement drawing and the turbine designation. For a fan, include the type, rotation, required operating point, connections and installation constraints.
Identify components retained aboard when requesting a mechanical replacement. For a system change, supply the engineering specification. Installation, testing and commissioning follow the applicable documentation and the agreed scope of work.
Prepare an equipment specification that can be compared consistently
Use a separate line for each equipment item or replacement component. Include the designation, quantity, application and reference to the attached drawing. Keep manufacturer codes unchanged and add an explanatory description beside them.
If a number is only partly readable, identify that uncertainty and attach a wider photograph showing where the part is installed. Clear references make it easier to resolve an identification question without altering the rest of the enquiry.
For new equipment, add operating profiles, required capacity, installation space, available power supply and interfaces with retained systems. A retrofit specification should describe both the current arrangement and the required outcome.
Separate the mechanical package, controls, auxiliary modules and requested documentation so that offers can be compared against the same boundary. State whether the enquiry concerns equipment only or also requires installation supervision and commissioning to be scoped.
After the inputs have been reviewed, the item list can be agreed line by line. Distinguish the main machine, mounting components, documentation, spare parts and site services in the commercial scope. A question about one component should remain linked to that component.
Submit a short task description in the enquiry form and attach the detailed specification. When several machines are involved, identify the machine belonging to every drawing and photograph, and retain your own comments when changing a selected equipment card.
