  • Head and tail detection for billets, strip and plate.
  • Installation in restricted areas near rolls and apron plates.
  • Tube shape and optical nozzle position matter when replacing the assembly.

Rota-Sonde TS5500

This infrared scanner measures the position of a hot product within its field of view. Applications include vertical or horizontal loop control and edge position monitoring. Specify scan orientation, standoff distance and required output.

  • Analogue position signals and a product presence output.
  • Loop control between rolling mill stands.
  • Laser line or pointer supports optical alignment.
  • Display of product position, signal level and diagnostic states.

VFT1 — hot and cold product detection

The LED time-of-flight detector distinguishes a product from background objects by distance. This family serves presence detection where the product is cold or its own thermal radiation is unsuitable for the application.

  • LED measurement source with distance-based detection.
  • Adjustable detection range and sensitivity settings.
  • Product presence and alarm outputs for line integration.
  • Specify background, surface, distance and cooling conditions.

DR500 / EM — optical barrier

The DR500 linear array receiver works with an EM emitter to detect products across a wide field. For system replacement, identify both sides of the barrier, their separation and the product position relative to the observation line.

  • Separate DR500 receiver and EM LED emitter.
  • Presence detection for either hot or cold metal.
  • Detection of small bars and product heads or tails.
  • Adjustable mounting stand supports observation line alignment.

IH — high temperature inductive switches

The IH family detects a metal target without contact near its sensing element. Its operating principle differs from optical observation at a distance. Housing dimensions, target clearance and electrical version are central to replacement selection.

  • Inductive detection of nearby metallic objects.
  • Versions intended for elevated ambient temperatures.
  • Use in steel industry mechanisms and production lines.
  • State target material, mounting, cable and controller input.

Dilas FT1800 — laser distance measurement

The digital sensor measures distance using laser pulse time of flight. Its target may be hot or cold, moving or stationary. Supply the distance range, surface condition and data interface when specifying the required version.

  • Non-contact distance measurement by time of flight.
  • Analogue result output or digital communication.
  • Distance display and setup from the sensor control panel.
  • Mounting stand, water cooling and air purging depend on the configuration.

Velas DL4000-N — speed and length

The laser Doppler sensor measures speed and length without a contact measuring wheel. For cutting or product tracking applications, state the speed range, direction of travel and distance to the measured surface.

  • Non-contact measurement based on the Doppler effect.
  • Standard and bidirectional versions address different motion patterns.
  • Water cooling and air purging protect the optical window.
  • Ethernet and industrial protocols are selected for the control system.

DigiScan XD500 — cold strip width

The stereoscopic gauge measures width, centreline and edge positions in cold rolling mills and processing lines. An equipment enquiry should specify working width, strip position, installation area and requirements for transmitting the measurement.

  • Two-camera measurement with geometric triangulation.
  • Gauge installed above the moving strip.
  • Built-in web server supports configuration and diagnostics.
  • Ethernet with Modbus TCP; additional protocols depend on the version.

StereoVision SV6000 — head and tail geometry

The stereoscopic system measures the three-dimensional shape of hot product heads and tails. Camera placement, observation area and the related process operation are important, including monitoring a product leaving a reversing rougher.

  • Stereoscopic observation of the hot product.
  • Spatial measurement of head and tail shape.
  • Web interface for parameters and diagnostic access.
  • Protected housing, cooling and air cleaning for the optics.

DELTA optics, cables and replacement assemblies

Maintenance parts are identified from the operating manual and the complete sensor designation. An enquiry may include an optical head, fibre, protective glass, cable or mounting assembly with the component code from the documentation.

  • Replaceable component code from the operating manual.
  • Overall installation and damaged component photographs.
  • Required scope of optics, electronics and connections.
  • Preservation of mounting geometry when replacing an individual assembly.

DELTA sensors for steel production

DELTA was founded in 1954 and has its headquarters near Strasbourg in France. Its product families cover continuous casting, hot and cold rolling, and metal processing lines. The range includes presence detectors, position scanners and dimensional measurement systems.

Begin an equipment enquiry with the required function: detect a product, control its position or measure a dimension. Send the installed model designation or a drawing of the process area.

State what passes the sensor, which result the control system needs and where the measuring assembly can be installed.

Identify the complete sensor version

Photograph the complete label, including model suffixes, supply information and serial designation. Add photographs of the connector and mounting stand. Different versions within a family can use different electrical outputs and setup methods, so retain every character of the original designation.

For an individual assembly, identify the other system components as well: optical head, fibre, receiver and emitter. State the number of units and list the cables, protective windows or brackets required with each position.

This creates a clear boundary between a sensor replacement and a complete measuring system order.

Choose HMD, CMD or inductive detection

A hot metal detector senses radiation emitted by the product. Cold metal detection uses an external optical source or distance measurement and also serves cold products. An inductive proximity switch detects a metal target close to its sensing element.

Choose the principle according to the product and the observation geometry.

Specify product temperature separately from the ambient temperature around the housing. Describe steam, scale, water spray and background objects.

A photograph taken along the observation direction helps show clear sight lines, reflective surfaces and obstacles between the instrument and the material moving through the process area.

Product presence and loop position

A presence detector supplies a signal when metal arrives at a defined point. Loop control requires a position measurement for the control system. The TS5500 output relates to angular product position within its field of view, making sensor orientation part of the application data.

Mark both stands, the expected loop movement and the installation point on a drawing. For edge control, show the direction of edge movement. Include the required signal type and the controller behaviour when product is absent.

These details distinguish loop regulation from triggering the next operation on the line.

Connect the system to automation

Include the relevant electrical drawing with supply, signal output, common connection and controller input. For digital communication, identify the protocol and existing network.

The product family determines the measuring function, while the full version determines its connection to the control cabinet.

For replacement work, retain the cable designation and connector pin assignment from the manual. For a new project, specify the cable route and cabinet position.

List presence signals, analogue measurements and diagnostic outputs separately, together with the purpose of each signal in the process control system.

Cooling and optical window protection

Window condition and air purging affect the available detection margin. Record the protective hardware already fitted: hood, glass, heat shield, cooling plate or jacket. Identify which items belong in the replacement package and which remain installed at the measuring point.

State the available water and air conditions, local ambient temperature and nearby hot surfaces. Connection photographs help identify fittings.

Cooling and air purging are considered with the selected sensor version and mounting arrangement, so the equipment list covers the instrument and its supporting assemblies together.

Availability, price, lead time and required documents are agreed for the selected configuration. Official dealer status and interchangeability based on a model name alone are not claimed; suitability is checked against the project documentation.
