How to choose a machine or generator

We need the workpiece size and weight, hardening zone and depth, material, batch size, required power and frequency, and loading method. MIND-S and PICO suit single parts and small batches; MIND-L, SYSTEM-LINE and RACK modules suit continuous production.

Frequency sets the heating depth: LF for large parts and deep layers, MF for medium parts, HF for small parts and shallow layers. SDF® combines MF and HF for contour hardening of gear teeth.

How the MIND series compare

The series are named by workpiece and machine size: S is the compact all-in-one up to 100 kW MF, M the all-rounder up to 250 kW MF, L high-volume with an indexing table up to 1000 kW, XL parts up to 200 kg with sources up to 2000 kW.

A machine is configured from the base machine, power source, automation, coolant system, clamping devices and tooling; lines with feeding, marking and NiO/SPC ejection are built with the manufacturer's partners.

MIND-S 1000 is designed for shaft parts, MIND-M 800 for chuck and shaft parts up to 600 mm, MIND-XL for components of agricultural and construction machinery, power plants, shipbuilding, wind turbines and roller bearings.

Induction hardening and the SDF® process

Heat is generated only in the surface layer, so distortion is lower and energy use is lower than with case hardening or flame hardening. Process data is recorded for every workpiece.

For cutting edges of punching tools the outer layer is heated to approximately 800–900 °C; induction tempering is integrated into MIND machines.

Examples on the manufacturer's site include outer races, car and motorbike camshafts, steering pinions, valve gates, rotor shafts, cam rings, crankshafts and camshaft bushings.

Brazing, shrink-fitting and other heating

Soft soldering is done below 450 °C, brazing above 450 °C. Induction heats only the joint zone: bus bars, copper wire, heat exchangers and carbide pins are brazed.

Shrink-fitting joins stators to housings, rotor laminations to shafts, gearwheels and rotor caps to shafts. Induction is also used for welding pre-heating, stress-relieving, melting and decoating.

Brazing can use pre-laid brazing foil, shielding gas or an inert atmosphere to reduce oxidation.

Control and process monitoring

MIND machines use the Siemens SINUMERIK ONE CNC; generators use a Siemens PLC and Profinet, with Profibus and EtherCAT options. The EEI² interface stores up to 500 recipes.

eQC modules collect process data for Industry 4.0: earth fault, magnetic flux, energy consumption and RFID tags.

Generator options include storage of up to 100 temperature curves, RFID tags, quick couplings for cooling water and an IP54 housing.

Cooling, hose packages and connections

Generators are water-cooled: the flow is given in the data table for each size, from 6 l/min at 5 kW to 49 l/min for PICO-L 150 MF. The inductor connects to the generator through a hose package of 5 m for MF and 3 m for HF, up to 15 m and 5 m on request.

PICO-SC has an active cooler of 7, 10 or 15 kW; heating stations use KLH Omega coolers of 6.3–67.9 kW.

The maximum ambient temperature for PICO-SC is 35 °C.
