Selection inputs

Base metal and thicknesses, process, welding position, current type, shielding gas and weld-metal requirements. List batch documents separately.

Consumables for an existing line

EN ISO or AWS classification, diameter, packaging type, batch mass and purchase volume. Identify flux and wire as a pair.

Consumables for a welding line

ESAB welding consumables are considered as part of a production process: covered electrodes for manual welding, wires for semi-automatic and mechanised equipment, fluxes for submerged-arc welding, nickel alloys and hardfacing products. Welding machines and cutting equipment are outside this section.

For a new work area, define the process, base metal, thicknesses and output volume first, then select grades. For an existing area, the classification of the material in use, its diameter and its packaging are usually enough to begin.

Data for selection by welding task

Describe the base-metal grades and thicknesses, joint types, welding position, process and current type. State the shielding gas if it is already fixed on site, together with any toughness, test-temperature or corrosion requirements.

Mark the documents required separately: batch certificate, data sheet, test report or classification-society approval. ESAB product pages state that approvals depend on the factory location, so the required document is confirmed for a specific batch.

If the area works to a qualified welding procedure, attach its parameters and the specified consumable. Changing a filler material may require requalification, and that decision remains with the welding engineer of the plant.

Manual welding and covered electrodes

ESAB covered electrodes for stainless steel are grouped by coating into rutile, basic and high-deposition types. OK 67.50 and OK 68.81 are rutile electrodes with duplex weld metal, and OK 48.00 is a basic electrode for carbon steels.

For manual welding, specify diameter, length, welding position and power source. ESAB supplies its stainless electrodes in VacPac vacuum packaging from 0.7 to 2 kg, with smaller outer cartons for small diameters.

Mechanised welding with wire

For semi-automatic equipment and robots, the wire type, diameter, shielding gas and package format matter. OK Autrod 12.51 is delivered in Marathon Pac drums intended for mechanised welding, while Dual Shield and Shield-Bright wires run with CO2 or an argon and CO2 mixture.

Flux-cored wires give all-position welding and suit shipbuilding, bridges, railcars and heavy equipment. Grade and gas are chosen together, and a gas change on site should be checked against the product data sheet.

For creep-resistant steels consider OK AristoRod 13.22 for service temperatures up to 600 °C, and OK AristoRod 13.26 for weathering steels. OK Tigrod 316L is the published TIG rod for austenitic stainless steel.

Submerged-arc welding and hardfacing

In submerged-arc welding the flux and wire are selected as a pair, and ESAB states that mechanical values are guaranteed for the chosen combination. OK Flux 10.71 is general purpose, OK Flux 10.72 targets low-temperature toughness and OK Flux 10.62 suits multipass welding of clean plate.

For worn components, OK 84.85, OK 84.77 and the OK Tubrodur 13Cr S cored wire with OK Flux 10.61 are the published hardfacing options. State the wear mode, temperature, base material and the dimensions of the area to be built up.

Nickel electrodes OK 92.28 and OK NiFe-CI are used for Inconel 600-type alloys, dissimilar steels and cast-iron repair. The base material determines the acceptable grade, so attach its composition.

Stainless and dissimilar joints

For stainless steel ESAB publishes the OK 67.50 and OK 68.81 electrodes, Shield-Bright 308L, 309L and 316L flux-cored wires, the OK Tigrod 316L rod and OK Autrod 16.95, an ER307 (mod) type wire. For each grade state the base-metal group: austenitic, duplex or other.

For stainless-to-carbon joints the 309L cored wire is considered, and OK 67.50 for duplex steels. Grade 316L is described by the manufacturer for chemical and food processing and for shipbuilding.

The filler grade must match the base-metal group and the service conditions. Attach the steel certificate, the joint drawing and the working environment so that the choice can be clarified before quotation.

Packaging, storage and batch documents

Basic electrodes and fluxes are sensitive to moisture. Take redrying and storage conditions from the technical data sheet and the pack marking, and agree the volume and shipment schedule in advance when buying ahead.

At receiving, compare the grade, diameter, mass and batch number with the agreed specification. Do not release damaged vacuum packs or damp electrodes for production without a decision by the welding specialist.

To start a quotation, send the grade or classification, base metal, diameter, packaging and purchase volume. Missing details can be listed on a separate line of the enquiry.
