Choosing the right marking technology: Handheld, CIJ or DOD

Selecting an industrial EBS marking system depends directly on operating conditions, substrate properties and production speed.

For continuous packaging lines with fast-moving goods (bottles, cans, cables, flexible pouches), high-speed continuous inkjet (CIJ) printers of the Boltmark II series are recommended. They deliver crisp alphanumeric codes and barcodes at throwing distances up to 30 mm.

For secondary packaging, corrugated boxes, steel pipes and pallets, large-character DOD systems (EBS-1500) or portable HandJet markers provide versatile coding directly in warehouses or dispatch yards.

Equipment selection also accounts for conveyor line geometry, positioning of optical synchronization sensors and pitch between adjacent units. This structured approach prevents ink wastage and optimizes total operating costs across plant operations.

Features of the HandJet mobile marking family

The HandJet EBS-250 and EBS-260 have transformed industrial mobile marking, superseding slow stenciling and manual tagging. Equipped with electromagnetic valves and 120-150 um nozzles, they handle heavy non-volatile inks without clogging during standby.

An integrated optomechanical encoder continuously calculates hand speed, ensuring uniform character spacing regardless of operator motion across rough concrete, wood or steel surfaces. Dedicated guide rollers enable stable marking along curved pipes and cylindrical steel drums without slippage.

Long-life high-capacity lithium-ion batteries support full working shifts without mid-day recharging. Clean cartridge changes take mere seconds with no mess or fluid exposure.

Continuous inkjet principles in Boltmark II printers

In EBS-6600 and EBS-6900 printers, ink pressurized up to 4 bar is ejected through a precision nozzle and modulated by a 60+ kHz piezoceramic resonator into uniform droplets.

Electrostatic charging plates impart a specific charge to each droplet, which is then deflected across high-voltage plates to form characters on moving targets. Unused droplets return via the gutter vacuum into circulation, minimizing fluid consumption.

The fully sealed fluidic loop prevents volatile solvents from evaporating into factory workspaces. Automatic line flushing during startup and shutdown prevents nozzle encrustation, keeping printers production-ready after extended operational standstills.

Modular architecture of EBS-1500 DOD systems

EBS-1500 systems feature a modular design: an industrial multi-tasking controller connects to distributed printheads via noise-immune RS-485 interfaces. This architecture allows simultaneous marking on opposing sides of a conveyor or across multiple production lanes.

Independent pneumatic-hydraulic fluid distribution prevents pigment settling and maintains steady operating pressure. Isolating electronic controls from ink circuits protects sensitive logic boards during washdown cycles.

Micrometer-adjustable mounting brackets ensure fine printhead alignment against moving cartons, while rugged shields safeguard nozzles against accidental mechanical shock.

Selecting inks and fluids for specific substrates

Fluid chemistry must match surface tension and adhesion requirements. Fast-drying MEK-based inks (drying time under 1 second) are selected for non-porous plastics, coated metals and glass. Flexible inks are formulated for cables and shrink film.

For food and pharmaceutical packaging, ethanol-based and water-based formulations offer low-odor, environmentally safe performance.

For anti-counterfeit protection and internal traceability, specialized UV-fluorescent security inks are available that illuminate exclusively under ultraviolet inspection lamps. Choosing the right solvent base guarantees permanent mark permanence during long-term storage and rough transport.

Connecting EBS markers to MES and SCADA systems

EBS industrial printers feature Ethernet, USB and Wi-Fi interfaces, enabling straightforward communication with factory automation, PLC controllers and ERP systems.

They receive live production data, expiry dates, high-resolution batch numbers and 2D DataMatrix codes, ensuring full traceability throughout manufacturing and distribution. Direct Modbus TCP fieldbus connectivity eliminates transmission bottlenecks on high-speed bottling and bagging machinery.

Dedicated EdGraf software allows operators to remotely distribute message templates, configure fonts and maintain an audit log of executed coding jobs.

Preventive maintenance and quick-change iModule technology

The iModule design in the Boltmark II series streamlines routine servicing. Integrating sub-micron ink filters, reserve tank and service valves, the module is replaced in under five minutes without specialized tooling.

Regular module replacement prevents nozzle contamination and preserves the high-frequency acoustic resonator. An embedded smart memory chip alerts operators to filter lifecycle and avoids accidental fluidic overflow.

Built-in physical guide keys prevent improper orientation, and automated self-calibration diagnostics run immediately after insertion.

Specifying equipment packages and replacement parts

When ordering systems, define electrical requirements, ambient temperature, line speed and material specifications. For replacement parts, provide the serial number from the EBS nameplate, component designation and details of the current ink formulation.

Detailed application requirements enable our engineering team to recommend proper nozzle sizes and synchronization sensors for clean code execution. Sample substrate testing is available for non-standard packaging materials to verify adhesion and contrast prior to equipment commitment.

Production line equipment selection

For new projects, provide conveyor speed, product dimensions, code layout and environmental conditions. We help select the appropriate HandJet handheld marker or Boltmark II continuous inkjet setup with all necessary accessories.

If required, we can outline a recommended startup kit of fast-wearing spares and operational fluids to ensure uninterrupted commissioning.
