High-Frequency Dielectric HPR Principle in Werne & Thiel Online Moisture Probes
Werne & Thiel industrial moisture probes operate on the proprietary High Frequency Dielectric Polarisation and Field Refraction (HPR) measurement principle.
An integrated high-frequency oscillator projects an electromagnetic sensing field into the material layer passing across the probe face and evaluates the dielectric permittivity contrast between water molecules and dry solid particles.
High-frequency field refraction suppresses measurement drift caused by ionic conductivity variations from dissolved salts or mineral additives in concrete sand, aggregates, and biomass.
Internal conditioning electronics output a linearized 0–10 V or 0/4–20 mA analog signal directly to plant batching controllers.
Mechanical Probe Selection Across FS1, FSV, FSM, FSA, and FSH Sensor Families
Each sensor series addresses distinct mounting geometries and mechanical load profiles in bulk handling plants. The FS1 classic disc probe features a fixed three-hole flange for flush mounting in weigh hoppers and dosing chutes.
The FSV universal probe incorporates an adjustable clamping flange to accommodate thick bunker walls or sliding belt glider brackets over conveyors.
For deep storage vessels, the FSA arm sensor extends 20 cm, 50 cm, or 100 cm directly into the silo stream above discharge gates where material head pressure remains uniform.
For planetary and pan concrete mixers, the FSM probe combines an 8 mm replaceable steel sleeve with a 10 mm ceramic sensing face.
Wear Protection Materials for Abrasive Aggregates, Impact Zones, and Hot Media up to 190 °C
Selecting the correct replaceable sensing cover protects the high-frequency resonator from premature mechanical wear and material buildup. Standard synthetic covers provide low-friction sliding for non-abrasive powders, grains, and light pellets.
In quartz sand, crushed gravel, and foundry sand lines, high-density special ceramic plates (up to 10 mm thick on FSM probes and 3 mm on FSA probes) resist severe sliding abrasion.
Impact-resistant special rubber absorbs kinetic energy from coarse falling stones, while food-grade PTFE Teflon prevents sticking in cohesive pastes and withstands process medium temperatures up to 190 °C on FSH high-temperature sensors.
Two-Channel Signal Processing and Temperature Compensation with FMP-2 Units
The second-generation FMP-2 moisture processing and display unit evaluates signals from up to two independent moisture probes along with two external or integrated PT100 temperature sensors.
Each channel stores five selectable calibration curves with up to 40 linearization points, enabling operators to switch material profiles across different aggregate grades or grain varieties via the graphic LCD touchscreen.
Pluggable backplane terminal bars simplify cabinet wiring, while the galvanically isolated RS485 interface and USB port transmit real-time and batch-averaged moisture values over long cable runs to supervisory PLC systems.
OLAS Optical Light Absorption Technology for Slurry Density and Concrete Water Recycling
The patented Optical Light Absorption Sensor (OLAS) transmits a controlled light beam into liquid-solid mixtures and measures light attenuation to determine solids concentration, turbidity, and density.
In ready-mix and precast concrete plants, OLAS monitors grey residual water in recycling basins and pipelines, allowing automated batching systems to compensate water and cement weights accurately.
Beyond concrete residual water, the optical absorption system tracks concentration changes in chemical pulp, mineral slurries, suspensions, and continuous foil or coating thickness processes.
Reference Calibration Workflow Using PMB Series Halogen Moisture Analyzers
Establishing accurate multi-point calibration curves for inline FSx probes relies on thermogravimetric reference testing with PMB 53, PMB 163, and PMB 202 laboratory moisture analyzers.
Representative material samples collected during live batching are weighed with 0.001 g readability and dried under uniform halogen bulb heating adjustable in 1 °C steps.
The resulting loss-on-drying percentage is paired with the raw sensor output using either the zero and span potentiometers inside the probe terminal box or the 40-point curve table in the FMP-2 processor, aligning inline readings with laboratory quality standards.
