Impellers, diffusers, sacrificial zinc anodes, and hydraulic wear components Grindex

Engineered hydraulic wear components Grindex are designed to extend service intervals of dewatering units operating under severe abrasive slurry conditions. The offering includes Hard-Iron impellers, adjustable discharge diffusers, suction wear plates, cable entries, and sacrificial zinc anodes.

  • High-chromium Hard-Iron impellers withstand prolonged hydro-abrasive impingement
  • Adjustable polyurethane diffusers restore design clearances without disassembly
  • Sacrificial zinc anodes provide electrochemical galvanic protection for housings
  • Water-tight cable entry glands with dual strain relief prevent moisture ingress

Engineering traditions and technical evolution of Grindex

The engineering heritage of Swedish pump maker Grindex originated in 1940 when engineers Börje Kristensson and Grähs established a specialized mechanical workshop near Stockholm.

Initially fabricating grinding machinery and Rockmaster rock drill sharpeners, the founders directly observed severe limitations in early submersible dewatering equipment, which suffered from excessive weight and burned out immediately when running without liquid.

The defining technical breakthrough arrived when Grindex invented and patented an air cooling valve that enabled submersible pumps to run dry without overheating. In 1960 the manufacturing base relocated to Haninge, initiating the commercial launch of the legendary Minor and Major lines.

Today Grindex belongs to Xylem Inc and is recognized as a global benchmark for mining and construction dewatering.

Air valve mechanism and unsupervised dry running protection

The primary operational distinction of Grindex submersible drainage units is the patented air cooling valve mechanism. When an excavation sump runs dry, ordinary submersible units overheat rapidly due to lost fluid heat transfer.

In Grindex pumps, the moment the liquid level falls below the suction inlet, the air valve opens automatically, drawing ambient air across the internal cooling jacket.

This induced convective airflow absorbs stator thermal buildup, enabling the unit to run dry for extended hours without requiring operator intervention.

Once ground water or runoff inflow returns, the valve closes under differential hydraulic suction, immediately restoring peak pumping flow without cavitation or thermal shock to the mechanical seals.

SMART electronic surveillance and motor health monitoring

Modern industrial Grindex pumps integrate the SMART electronic surveillance system, housed within a sealed internal chamber inside the pump structure.

This microprocessor unit provides comprehensive three-fold electrical protection: it continuously monitors stator thermal sensors, blocks motor startup under reversed phase rotation, and interrupts power during hazardous single-phasing or voltage asymmetry.

The built-in phase rotation correction automatically reconfigures electric drive rotation without manual wiring changes inside the terminal junction box.

During thermal overload or electrical voltage drops, the SMART system stops the motor, protecting internal stator windings from insulation breakdown and preserving bearing operating life.

Vortex hydraulic design and heavy slurry agitator assemblies

To pump thick slurries and abrasive sediments, Grindex employs two specialized hydraulic architectures. In the Salvador and Sandy sludge lines, a recessed vortex impeller is positioned deep within the volute chamber.

This vortex rotation creates a swirling hydraulic vortex that moves solids directly through the pump body without direct abrasive impact against impeller blades.

For heavy-density mineral tailings and drilling bentonite, the Bravo slurry pump series mounts a rugged Hard-Iron agitator directly onto the extended drive shaft.

During rotation, the agitator breaks up compacted mud and sand, creating a fluid slurry mixture and enabling smooth transport of dense media with specific gravity up to 1.8 kilograms per liter.

Modular cartridge shaft seals and Hard-Iron hydraulic alloys

Reliable motor chamber isolation under high hydrostatic submergence depth is provided by dual mechanical shaft seals operating within an oil reservoir. Grindex utilizes a modular Plug-In cartridge architecture where both seal assemblies are pre-aligned within a single unit.

The seal faces are fabricated from sintered silicon carbide, maintaining contact flatness under heavy friction.

The Plug-In cartridge slips smoothly into place, avoiding seal face misalignment or elastomeric damage during service overhauls. The oil chamber includes an external inspection plug for testing oil cleanliness.

Hydraulic wet end components are poured from high-chromium Hard-Iron alloy hardened to 60 HRC, resisting severe hydro-abrasive impingement.

Stainless steel Inox pump series for corrosive chemical duties

In mining leach plants, industrial metallurgy, and chemical processing facilities, drainage runoff often carries dissolved acids, metal salts, and aggressive sulfates.

For such demanding duties, Grindex developed the Inox pump series, where all metallic parts are manufactured from acid-proof austenitic stainless steel grade AISI 316. The units pump corrosive fluids spanning pH 2 to pH 10.

All internal O-rings, lip seals, and cable bushings in the Inox series are molded from FKM Viton fluoropolymers, resisting chemical degradation when exposed to hot acidic mixtures and petroleum oils.

The Inox family is available in both drainage and vortex sludge models, delivering reliable dewatering across harsh chemical environments.
