CSM membranes for water-treatment systems
CSM is a membrane brand of Toray Advanced Materials Korea. Select RO, NF, UF and ion exchange membranes by feed-water analysis, system duty and complete element designation.
Brackish-water RO BE
BE membranes address brackish-water desalination. A replacement request should identify the complete element designation, the installed system and feed-water analysis. Compare the required permeate quality with the operating conditions of the existing membrane train.
- RE8040-BE, BE34, BE440, BE HR
- RE4040-BE, RE2540-BE, RE4021-BE
- Application: Brackish Water
- Selection by label and system layout
Low-pressure RO BLN and BLR
BLN and BLR belong to the CSM low-pressure range. Selection connects the membrane to feed salinity, available pressure and stage flow. Matching outside dimensions alone does not establish that two elements will produce the same system result.
- RE8040-BLN, BLN440, BLR, BLR440
- RE4040-BLN and RE4040-BLR
- Also RE2540 and RE4021
- Test category: LP Standard
Low-pressure High Flux RO BLF
BLF is the Low Pressure High Flux range. Consider it together with pump duty, pretreatment capacity and the other installed elements. An element flow figure is only one part of the assessment of a complete membrane system.
- RE8040-BLF and RE8040-BLF440
- RE4040-BLF, RE2540-BLF, RE4021-BLF
- Test category: LP High Flux
- Check feed and concentrate flows
Fouling-resistant RO elements
The Fouling Resistant range is designed to reduce membrane-surface fouling. For industrial water and treated wastewater reuse, describe the pretreatment process, organic loading and cleaning history. These inputs help distinguish membrane selection from an upstream process problem.
- RE8040-FLF, FLR, FEn
- Variants 34, 440 and FEnHR
- RE4040-FLR and RE4040-FEn
- Select by water analysis and duty
Nanofiltration NE membranes
NF selection considers the different rejection of monovalent and divalent ions. Keep NaCl and MgSO4 rejection figures separate when comparing NE elements, and retain the HP1 designation whenever it appears on the installed membrane label.
- NE4040 and NE8040: ARM, 40, 70, 90
- Separate HP1 versions
- NE8040-LXM, NE8040-90F, NE8040-XDM
- Separation and water-treatment duties
Ultrafiltration UE elements
UF separates particles and larger molecules while dissolved ions remain in the water. For UE elements, specify the process liquid and required molecular-weight cut-off. UF and RO address different treatment duties and should be assessed as separate process stages.
- UE8040-ES10: MWCO 10K
- UE8040-PF: MWCO 50–100K
- Nominal element size 8040
- Provide liquid composition and flow
Small RO and UF elements
For compact systems, provide the element label, housing and connection photographs. The characters after the size identify the version. A view of the open housing helps check element length, seating and the arrangement of the seals.
- RO: RE1812, RE2012, RE2812, RE3012
- Examples: RE1812-HR+ and RE2012-LP
- UF: UE1810 and UE2010
- Use the full designation, not size alone
Ion exchange membranes
CSM ion exchange membranes separate cations and anions in electrochemical processes. Specify membrane type, format and the installed apparatus. These requirements differ from replacing a spiral-wound RO element in a pressure vessel.
- CEM and AEM membrane types
- Applications: mCDI, ED, RED, BPED
- Project-specific format and thickness
- Specify solution and apparatus
Define the required supply package
Begin with the task: replace an identified element, select membranes for a new system or procure a water-treatment package. For an installed plant, provide its manufacturer, model, vessel arrangement and number of stages. The CSM membrane and the plant around it may have different manufacturers.
Read the complete element designation
Copy every character on the membrane label, including the series and additional suffix. RE4040-BE, RE4040-BLN and RE4040-BLF identify different versions. Keep BE34, BE440, BLN440 or FEnHR when these appear in the installed element designation.
Attach clear label and packaging photographs. If a marking is incomplete, include the original specification and photographs of both element ends. These references provide a stronger identification than the nominal size alone.
Check 4040 and 8040 installation details
CSM tables identify 4040 with a nominal 4 × 40 inch size and 8040 with 8 × 40 inches. Also check actual dimensions, the permeate tube connection and seal arrangement. Vessel construction and interconnector details belong in the replacement assessment.
State the number of elements per vessel and identify the other installed membranes. For a partial replacement, mark the intended position on the layout. A size match starts the compatibility assessment; it does not complete the system calculation.
Prepare the feed-water analysis
Useful inputs include temperature, conductivity, salinity, hardness, alkalinity and information about organic loading. Provide the complete laboratory report, sample date and water source. For a variable source, identify the operating range considered in the original plant design.
Describe the required treated-water quality and its destination: a manufacturing process, preparation of solutions or a reuse loop. The outlet requirement helps define the separation duty and the information needed for membrane selection.
Compare performance under matching conditions
Published flow and rejection values refer to specified test salts, pressure, temperature and recovery. Many industrial CSM RO and NF tables state a test temperature of 25°C. Keep the test conditions alongside the figure when comparing element specifications.
For an existing plant, provide actual feed, permeate and concentrate flows, operating pressures and water temperature. Explain whether each measurement covers one vessel, one stage or the whole system. This makes the comparison relevant to the installed process.
Assess low-pressure and High Flux alternatives
BLN and BLR use the LP Standard test category, while BLF belongs to LP High Flux. Evaluate available pressure, feed conditions and the duty of subsequent stages before selecting another series. An unchanged number of vessels does not remove the need to assess the membrane configuration.
Provide the piping diagram, pump operating point and flow-control arrangement. If increased production is the goal, describe the required treated-water quantity and consumption pattern together with the installed equipment.
Specify the nanofiltration separation duty
Identify the substances to retain and those intended to pass into the permeate. Hardness reduction, solution separation and water preparation may require different NE versions. NaCl and MgSO4 rejection values describe separate tests and should remain separate in the specification.
For a process liquid, provide composition, concentration range, temperature and the desired separation result. Add the current product recovery and concentration when available. Treat an HP1 designation as part of the selected model identity.
Position ultrafiltration in the process
UF selection concerns the particles and larger molecules to separate. UE8040-ES10 and UE8040-PF have different molecular-weight cut-off specifications. State whether the feed is water or a process solution and identify the intended role of the membrane stage.
Include pretreatment and fouling history
For Fouling Resistant membranes, provide the water source, suspended-solids information and relevant organic loading. Attach the pretreatment layout, filter types and available operating measurements.
CSM technical guidance addresses colloidal, biological and organic fouling as parts of the membrane process.
If performance changed after a source-water or operating change, include records from both periods. These inputs help distinguish an element replacement requirement from a feed or pretreatment issue that affects the whole plant.
Describe the observed performance change
Identify the symptom: reduced permeate production, increased conductivity or a rising pressure difference. Include the date, water temperature, pressures and the results of the latest cleaning. The CSM manual covers data normalization and investigation of element performance changes.
An operating log and measurements from individual vessels are useful for a technical assessment. Identify accessible instruments and measurement points. The resulting request can then focus on membranes, connection components or another identified item in the system.
Identify seals and connection components
Provide the CSM designation for a membrane and dimensions or a drawing for a seal or connector. Show the element end, permeate tube and the component position inside the vessel. Auxiliary parts are selected against the construction of the installed apparatus.
Plan a new RO or NF configuration
A project request should include feed and product flow, water analysis, quality requirements, duty cycle and the process diagram. CSM provides CSMPRO for modelling RO and NF configurations. A projection supports the choice of membrane series and distribution across stages.
Prepare storage and receiving requirements
Identify the expected installation date and warehouse storage conditions before placing the order. CSM guidance includes element storage, loading and vessel closure. On receipt, check model markings, quantities and packaging condition against the agreed specification.
Describe industrial-water and reuse applications
CSM documents industrial-water treatment, municipal water and reuse of treated wastewater. State the industry, source stream and point where treated water returns to the process. For a specialist separation project, describe the process liquid itself and the required product.
Send an itemized procurement enquiry
Send the complete CSM designation, label photographs, quantity and delivery destination. When selecting by duty, include the water analysis, system layout and outlet requirements. A housing, seal or connector enquiry should also carry its own drawing or component identification.
Availability, price, lead time, documents, certification and service scope are confirmed for each enquiry. This page does not establish authorized-dealer status, universal membrane compatibility or compliance of treated water with a quality standard.
