E-Tech — Centerless grinders

ECG is offered in S, NC and CNC versions for throughfeed and infeed grinding.

Centerless grinders ECG

ECG is offered in S, NC and CNC versions for throughfeed and infeed grinding. Feed and wheel-dressing control distinguish the versions; the permitted workpiece diameter also depends on the workrest configuration.

ECG S

The manual version of the ECG family. Parts enquiries should identify the complete machine model and component configuration.

ECG NC

The lower Z slide is servo driven, with numerically set infeed distance. A PLC and touch screen control the grinding cycle.

ECG CNC

Configurations with 1 to 6 controlled axes cover feeding and dressing. Automation is listed as optional equipment.

ECG-CNC1206 / ECG-CNC1808 / ECG-CNC2008

With standard workrests: diameters 1–30 / 1–60 / 1–60 mm. Special workrests: 30–50 / 60–100 / 60–120 mm.

Throughfeed or infeed

For throughfeed work, show the complete part length, entry and exit shapes and feeding arrangement. For infeed work, provide the profile and shoulders that prevent axial passage. Specify the intended loading method separately.

ECG S, NC and CNC differ in control scope. NC adds servo feeding of the lower slide; CNC provides axis combinations for feeding and dressing. Choose the axis configuration around the profile and cycle.

Workrest and two different wheels

Standard and special workrest diameter ranges are listed separately. Identify the installed workrest and blade before selection. Grinding and regulating wheels have different functions, so each enquiry needs its own marking, dimensions and dressing requirements.

Selection and enquiry preparation

Start with the workpiece

For ECG, send a part drawing with the surfaces to be ground clearly identified. The starting information is part diameter, length and profile, throughfeed or infeed cycle, wheel dimensions, workrest and required output.

Distinguish the incoming blank dimensions from the final dimensions required after grinding.

Include material, heat treatment and actual stock allowance. An existing operation sheet is particularly useful because it connects the machine choice with workholding, inspection and the preceding manufacturing operations. Mark the drawing revision so that everyone evaluates the same part.

Identify the complete machine

For an existing machine, copy the full model designation from its nameplate, including every suffix. Provide a photograph, serial number, manufacturing year and the cover of the operating manual. Use that same designation across the enquiry and the parts schedule.

A family name identifies the catalogue range; it does not describe every installed configuration. If the machine has been retrofitted, list replacement drives, controls and added devices. Photographs of the current equipment help distinguish its present configuration from an older specification.

Check the envelope and workholding

Compare the workpiece dimensions with the selected model’s working envelope. Include projecting features, chuck, arbor, centres and fixture. Where the machine specification requires it, calculate the combined mass of the part and its workholding equipment.

Show the locating datums and wheel access on the drawing. Identify surfaces that must be finished in one setting and operations that permit reclamping. This gives a meaningful basis for comparing configurations beyond the largest diameter printed in a catalogue.

Define accuracy and inspection

Specify dimensional tolerances, form, relationships between surfaces and surface finish separately. Supply the inspection method used at your plant or a sample inspection report. Mark different requirements directly against the relevant surfaces on the drawing.

Display resolution, feed increment and finished-part tolerance are different specifications. The equipment enquiry should state the result required on the workpiece, the method used to verify it and the proposed conditions for an acceptance trial. This avoids comparing unrelated catalogue figures.

Describe batches and changeovers

State batch size, shifts and expected output per shift. Describe loading, unloading, dressing, measurement and changeover operations separately. Each contributes to the production cycle alongside the time during which the wheel is actually removing material.

If one machine will process several parts, include representative drawings for the smallest, largest and most demanding geometries. Explain how often the part type changes and which manual tasks are acceptable. This provides a practical basis for discussing automation and tooling.

List the required components

Typical enquiry subjects include grinding and regulating wheels, spindles, workrest blade, regulating-wheel servo drive, slides and dressers. Identify the component and its position on the machine, with a part number or an item reference from an assembly drawing.

Give each requested component its own quantity and line in the enquiry.

Photograph the complete marking, mounting points, connectors and surrounding assembly. If the part is unavailable for inspection, provide a spare-parts drawing with the required position highlighted and the assembly number visible. State whether you need the individual item or a complete assembly.

Match wheels and spindle tooling

For a spindle enquiry, include its nameplate, mounting drawing, drive arrangement and service connections. For an arbor, provide mounting dimensions, overhang and the wheel designation. A photograph of the installed assembly helps relate these details to the actual machine configuration.

For abrasive tooling, state its marking, outside diameter, bore, width, workpiece material and operation. When a surface problem followed a wheel change, provide both wheel designations and describe the difference observed.

This separates the tooling enquiry from a request for mechanical replacement parts.

Dressing and measurement

For a dressing unit, identify the holder, working element, drive and markings. Distinguish a dressing tool from a mechanism component or complete assembly. For a measuring device, provide its model, cable designation, connector and mounting location.

Attach the exact alarm text and a clear screen photograph when relevant. For intermittent dimensional variation, record whether it occurs after warm-up, dressing, a batch change or setup adjustment.

These observations give the enquiry more useful context than a general statement that accuracy has deteriorated.

Drives and control equipment

For a motor, servo drive, operator panel or control module, include the complete part number and hardware revision. If an electrical diagram is available, attach the sheet identifying the device. Photographs should show connector labels and the installed arrangement.

State whether the item was previously replaced and whether parameter backups are available. Provide relevant configuration information to the responsible technical specialist with the enquiry.

An apparently similar enclosure or model name is not a substitute for matching electrical and software requirements.

Coolant and lubrication equipment

For pumps, filters and lubrication components, provide the nameplate, filter-element designation and connection details. State the operating fluid and parameters documented for the installed unit. Housing and seating dimensions are useful if a filter marking can no longer be read.

If overheating or contamination prompted the enquiry, describe what was observed and under which operating conditions. Separate a consumable replacement, a repair assessment and a complete system replacement. These have different scopes and require different information for a useful quotation.

Define the equipment package

List required controls, workholding, wheels, dressing, measurement, coolant equipment and loading arrangements. Mark each item as essential for the initial purchase or an option under consideration. Link important options to an operation on the supplied part drawing.

Compare quotations on the same scope. Two offers using the same series name may describe different packages. Record the proposed inspection trial and the documents needed to demonstrate the agreed configuration, so that the commercial comparison remains tied to the manufacturing task.

Plan delivery and installation inputs

Provide the destination and known restrictions for unloading and equipment movement. For a machine, include available space, access routes, handling capacity and known utility information. Distinguish confirmed site conditions from items still being checked by the plant.

Before ordering, reconcile the documentation package, packing list and responsibilities for delivery and unloading. For spare parts, state any grouping or labelling requirements used by your maintenance team. The agreed equipment list should remain the reference throughout preparation and receipt.

Prepare a clear parts schedule

Use one enquiry line per item: machine model, component name, part number, quantity and attachment reference. If a drawing is available, include the assembly and position numbers. Keep visually similar items with different markings on separate lines.

Describe the contents of a repair kit rather than relying on a general name. When requesting a replacement for an older item, retain its original designation and provide details of the installed unit. This preserves the connection between the enquiry, the technical review and the quotation.

Review the quotation against the request

Check designation, quantity, scope and supporting documents for each line. For equipment, compare selected options and agreed processing requirements as well. Record clarifications in the same schedule so that the final version can be used for receipt inspection.

Save the agreed revision once differences have been resolved. It helps distinguish accepted configuration changes from transcription errors and makes subsequent parts enquiries easier. Packaging, identification and documentation requirements are best agreed before the order is placed.

Quotation scope and catalogue limits

Stock, price, lead time, dealership status, origin, warranty and compatibility are not assumed in advance. Part numbers, configuration, documents and applicability are checked for the specific enquiry; price and lead time are provided with the quotation. Catalogue limits apply to the named models, while options require separate agreement. Display resolution or a catalogue capacity is not a promise of finished-part performance for every application.
