Engineering Design and Blown-Arc Operating Principles of ULS Nozzles
French manufacturer AcXys Technologies designs ULS Nano and ULS Omega atmospheric plasma spot nozzles for pinpoint surface modification of technical polymers, glass substrates, and metal alloys at ambient factory pressure.
A high-frequency internal generator strikes an electric discharge inside a controlled flow of dry compressed air or nitrogen. The resulting blown-arc plasma stream transports highly reactive oxygen and nitrogen radicals together with excited neutral gas species straight onto the substrate surface.
This rapid chemical bombardment breaks non-polar carbon-hydrogen bonds and grafts polar carbonyl and hydroxyl groups, yielding dramatic gains in surface energy and wettability without bulk heating.
Wide-Area Continuous Substrate Treatment with ULD Plasma Curtains
Linear atmospheric plasma curtain heads of the ULD series by AcXys Technologies provide continuous, uniform surface activation for wide polymer webs, extruded profiles, and architectural glass plates from 60 to 500 mm in width.
The defining architectural advantage of ULD technology is the complete physical separation between the high-voltage electrical discharge area and the downstream substrate processing zone.
Discharge occurs inside a shielded electrode cavity fed with pure nitrogen or gas mixtures, allowing only the cold afterglow to reach the moving substrate. This prevents pinholes, localized arc burning, and thermal degradation on delicate foils and thin films.
Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition with ULCoat
The ULCoat modular processing system from AcXys Technologies implements atmospheric pressure plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) of nanostructured functional barrier films without vacuum autoclaves.
By vaporizing liquid organosilicon metal-organic precursors and injecting the gas phase into the active afterglow of an ULS Omega torch, ULCoat deposits dense SiOx nanolayers between 50 and 1000 nm in thickness with thickness variations kept strictly within two percent.
These functional nanocoatings impart robust hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties, moisture barrier protection, and exceptional bond strengths for demanding multi-material joining.
Integrated Motion Solutions and Safety Enclosures of ULScan Workstations
Turnkey robotic workstations of the ULScan series combine plasma discharge sources, motion axes, and exhaust manifolds into a self-contained industrial envelope.
The fully interlocked cabinet incorporates mechanical door switches, continuous ventilation monitoring, and an emergency shutdown circuit to safeguard operating personnel from moving linear gantries and active process by-products.
Operators configure scanning speeds, pitch offsets, and plasma power profiles via an intuitive multilingual touchscreen console, making ULScan ideal for cleanroom pilot runs and automated manufacturing lines.
